Pele in the News
You might be buried under a lava rock if you haven’t heard about the recent increase in activity from the Pu’u ‘O’o Vent of Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island. Following a recent earthquake, many additional fissures have opened and Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire, is really showing her strength. The truth is the Pu’u ‘O’o vent has been active and spewing magma since 1983 and Kilauea Volcano has been one of the most active volcanoes on earth since then. But not to worry here in Maui. Our famous volcano, Haleakala, is still sleeping. Maui and Aloha Motorsports are opened for business! Haleakala or “House of the Sun,” is considered a “dormant” volcano even though it erupted around 250 years ago. It’s a fantastic place to take one of our rental scooters or motorcycles for a ride up the longest, steepest paved road on the planet. The views are insane and once you get to the top you can hike into the crater and feel like you are on the moon. As you ascend to the peak, wind hitting your face, you can imagine what it was like a few hundred years ago and be thankful that you are not vacationing on the Big Island this year!
